Learn how to carve a spoon from a fresh cut tree using traditional Nordic carving techniques. We cover tree anatomy, knife holds for the hook & sloyd knife, drying, and finishing. This class is great for the beginner or the person wanting to learn Sloyd style carving. The class fee includes tool rental, materials, a finishing kit, and safety gloves. Please wear pants and close toed-shoes, as we are going to make some wood chips!

We will learn how to operate the wood lathe safely, explore form, and turn wood. Do you want to both practice your skills with power tools and build a picture frame for a custom piece in your home? This class is for you! We will build a picture frame with splines using the table saw, miter saw, and sander. You'll get some time with all of the power tools to increase your comfort level during the class. Students will have extra time with the table saw to build a reinforcing spline in each corner. The splines provide strength and style for your hand built frame to last a lifetime. Students should come to class with dimensions of the piece they want to frame, and we'll build a basic frame out of oak, cherry, or maple.

~Power tools 101 is a prerequisite for this course~

Learn how to transform rough lumber into finished sizes while making a mitered box with splines. This class will cover how to use the jointer, planer, table saw, and miter saw to create parallel sides and perpendicular corners before building the box. Through box-making, we will learn how to make mitered corners and spline inserts with the table saw and dados with the router. There will also be a demonstration on how to make a homemade veneer press. This class is open to students of all levels of ability, and we will make accommodations for anyone with a disability.

Open shop is a time for you to bring in any projects or crafts you are working on and have access to the tools and the space. While we will have an instructor on staff to help open shop run smoothly and make sure tools are being used safely, this is a self-directed work time NOT class time. Open shop is capped at 7 participants and needs 5 participants to run.

Registrants of open shop MUST have taken power tools 101 or be comfortable and experienced using power tools.

Every attendee of open shop must register. Please no guests without registration!

In this multi-session class each participant will make a coffee table, side table or bench that fits their space and needs. Each student will design their table, mill lumber, cut joinery including mortise and tenons and bridal joints, and sand and finish their tables. Students will use the tablesaw, band saw, miter saw, drill press, jointer and planer in this class, as well as chisels.
Students can choose to build their table out of cherry, red oak, or walnut.

The materials fee is $70 for cherry or red oak and $115 for walnut. When selecting an admission cost, be sure to choose the one that includes the wood you want to use.

Design and customize your own delightful little tray! In this class, you will choose from a selection of funky veneer panels that vary in size and build a frame out of solid wood. We will use the table saw and miter saw to cut the frame, and bandsaw to customize the shape and profile of the frame. The corners will be mitered with a spline for enforcement. Creativity is encouraged!

This is a great follow-up course for those who have taken the picture frames class.

Spring Garden Fundraiser Pick Up and Pop Up (07 May 2026)

Fireweed's Spring Garden Fundraiser Pick Up is happening Thursday through Saturday May 7 - 9th (more specific hours and details coming soon!). Visit the online store to see all the options! In the works: we're planning to offer plant starts and a seed swap and a mini-pop up market Thursday 3-7 pm Friday 1-5 pm, Saturday 9-noon.

Activated Compost and Vermicast generously provided by Mother Dirt Collective.

Once the orders start coming in, we will put out the call for volunteers to help us build these beds and benches! It's gonna be a lot of fun!

In this 2-day course students will use the bandsaw to create a box that can be used in countless ways! Working from a solid piece of wood salvaged from lumberyard offcuts, you will learn to design, layout, cut, sand, and reassemble the pieces to form a functional box and lid. Once you learn the basic process, the possibilities are endless! You will learn and use the following tools during class: bandsaw, spindle sander, orbital sanders, clamps.

A 30 minute meal slot will be set aside on day one, you are invited to bring something to eat and drink each day.

You will learn the basics to understand the structure of staircases, including elements of a staircase, necessary math, and building code. We will then apply that knowledge to building your own stepstool. This class is great for anybody looking for hands-on framing experience, and for homeowners who may see a repair project in their future!

In this hands-on workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of wall-mounting—from understanding wall types and locating studs to choosing the right anchors and tools for the job. The goal: to leave with the confidence and know-how to mount objects securely, beautifully, and accessibly in their own homes. Traditional Appalachian Sweeper Broom (all gender/ no gender) (17 May 2026)

Traditional Appalachian Sweepers use craft broomcorn (stalk is attached to the hurl) to create a full sweep broom with a beautiful plaited (woven) pattern around the handle. Day 1 - Learn to wind the soaked broomcorn onto the handle in multiple layers and plait (weave) the stalk around the handle. Bring a snack because we will have a 20 minute break. Students will take their brooms home to dry before the next class. Day 2 we will focus on stitching the broom. The classroom will be available after the class ends if you would like to finish stitching. Participants should have moderate hand, leg and foot strength to control the footbreak while winding the broom by hand.

It can be hard to find just the right picture frame--especially for one-of-a-kind art--and custom frames are expensive. Solve that problem by learning how to build your own! May Hand Tool Crafting Hangout (BYO projects) (18 May 2026)

This craft hang is a gathering in the hand tools classroom at Fireweed Woodshop. The purpose is for students and members to get together around making and crafting, share skills and chit chat, get to know each other, enjoy the woodshop's space, community, and belonging. It's also perfect for students who started a spoon in class and would like to use Fireweed's carving knives to finish it.

Other handcrafting projects could include woodblock carving, figure carving, Kolrosing, chip carving, hand sanding, knitting, crochet, etc....

6:30-8:30pm Registration is free or give what you can without pressure!

Bring your own project to the shop for some company, community, and sharing tips and tricks. This is NOT A CLASS, just a hangout.

Open Finish (all gender/ no gender) (27 May 2026)

Open Finish is a guided open studio session focused on woodworking finishing. While Fireweed offers Open Shop and Open Turning, this is our first session dedicated entirely to finishing.

We’ll start with a 30‑minute instructor‑led demo covering standard sanding techniques, including surface prep, grit progression, and tips for getting a smooth, finish‑ready surface. After that, the remaining two hours are open studio time. Students will work on their own projects while asking questions, getting feedback, and receiving individualized guidance from the instructor.

This session is great for anyone with a completed project who wants support, shared studio time, and focused finishing expertise.

Project approval & shop safety:

To help keep our shop safe for everyone, students bringing in a project made outside of Fireweed must email the instructor in advance for approval. Some materials can’t be worked on in the woodshop - for example, sanding painted objects or using paint stripper is not allowed.

Finishing materials:

This shop time is specifically for students to prepare their finished projects for applying finish. Actual application of finish cannot be done at Fireweed Woodshop. Students cannot bring in their own finishes for safety reasons. The instructor will have samples of wood that has different types of finishes for students to view, and can provide advice on which finishes to purchase.

Prerequisite:

Basic woodworking experience recommended. Projects should be fully built and ready for sanding and finishing touches.

Learn about the ins and outs of installing trim. Cut with a miter and coping saw the base, face, and trim and practice installing it with an airnailer. Learn what's behind the wall so your trim is secured properly. This course is designed for beginners. All skill levels welcome.

Table Saw Skills (women + marginalized genders) (01 June 2026)

The table saw is a staple in any woodworker's shop! Fundamentally, the table saw is a way to size materials, but it can also act as a substitute for many other tools in the shop. In this class, students will learn through demos and hands-on practice a sample of some of the many ways the table saw can be modified to make special cuts. We will cover proper use and set up, ripping vs. cross-cutting, dado set-up, and a variety of joinery, dependent upon time. Come to class with all your table saw questions: we will have allotted time to explore further table saw uses based on students' interests. This class is a great opportunity for people who want hands-on practice with the table saw OR to observe: any level of participation is supported! The materials cost for this class will go towards maintenance of the shop and jigs.

Intro to Marquetry (all gender/no gender) (08 June 2026)

Learn how to create beautiful wood images using a technique called marquetry! Marquetry is a form of wood art that uses a variety of veneers cut out and glued together to create images and patterns.

On day 1, students will learn how to use an X-Acto knife to cut wood veneers and glue to join pieces together. We will practice cutting techniques and learn how to use wood grain and shades to create images that hold depth.

On day 2, students will be able to bring a photo or pick from provided templates and create their marquetry masterpiece. Finished images will be glued on to a 5x7 inch substrate.

Each student will receive a take-home marquetrate kit that will include an X-Acto knife with extra blades, self-healing mat to cut veneers on, sandpaper, and a small package of self-selected veneers. The kit is included in the cost of the class. Marquetry is a quiet activity that can be enjoying in a seated position. We encourage everyone of all abilities to attend this class.

Dive into plaiting techniques and weaving design. We will plait 2 whisks together with the goal for participants to understand how to achieve a tighter pattern or a wider weave pattern. Carve a Shrink Pot! (all gender/ no gender) (27 June 2026)

A shrink pot is a carved wooden container made long ago to hold precious items. The "shrink" pot technique takes advantage of the fact that wood shrinks as it dries. Working with a freshly cut branch yields a personalized container to hold everything from spices to a toothbrush.
The wet wood is malleable, allowing it to be carved, shaped, and hollowed out. As it dries, a dry wood bottom will be trapped in place. Wooden lids can be carved to fit snugly and add playful elements.

In this class, we will learn knife-holding techniques, how to manage moisture in wood, and the basic tool kit for turning branches into functional containers.
