Super Spoon Saturday Community Fundraiser - Such a Sweet Success

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! To all who participated in Fireweed's first Super Spoon Fundraiser which raised over $2000. Wasn't it just so dang good to be together, meet each other, get into wood craft?

Over 50 folks gathered on Saturday, October 3rd indoors and outdoors, many came to be introduced to all things spoon carving. There was carving tool sharpening and Kolrosing in the main classroom, the largest, coziest carving circle the hand tools classroom has ever seen, and the whole parking pad takeover of folks getting into axing out spoon blanks from Instructor Ema's freshly felled apple tree.

It was truly a celebration of the art of woodcraft in all of its simple splendor. We had some fund drawing for raffle winners. We convinced them to pose adorned with the hats of their choosing: hi-vis orange ball caps and a neon green fireweed beanie.

A neighbor passed by while Instructors Jeanette and Ema led twenty or so people in axing out a spoon blank behind the woodshop and that neighbor was so pleased to see what was going on they posted about it online, leading to a heart warming reddit conversation that included compliments on the groups' work pant selection. The weather was favorable, folks came and went as needed, we shared coffee and conversation while creating and crafting.

This community fundraiser was hosted by Instructors and board members volunteering time to share skills and love of craft, and the community responded with generosity and warmth. It was so good to see Fireweed's values of Community & Belonging, Nurturing Woodcraft, and Practicing Better Futures at work and reflected back from each participant.
