A shrink pot is a carved wooden container made long ago to hold precious items. The "shrink" pot technique takes advantage of the fact that wood shrinks as it dries. Working with a freshly cut branch yields a personalized container to hold everything from spices to a toothbrush. The wet wood is malleable, allowing it to be carved, shaped, and hollowed out. As it dries, a dry wood bottom will be trapped in place. Wooden lids can be carved to fit snugly and add playful elements.
In this class, we will learn knife-holding techniques, how to manage moisture in wood, and the basic tool kit for turning branches into functional containers.
The materials fee is $40 and is included in the admission cost.
