POLICIES

CANCELLATION POLICY

What is your general cancellation policy? If you cancel 14 days or more before the start of the class, you will receive a full refund. No refund or class credit if you cancel less than 14 days prior to the start of the class.

If you cannot make it to a class and are not eligible for a refund you can pass your registration along to a friend or family member. Please just email us at hello@ fireweedwoodshop.org with the name and email address of the new attendee. The new attendee should align with the original intention of the class (see below for Identity, Gender, and Race).

What is your weather cancellation policy? Class is on unless you hear from us. We will email you if we have to cancel due to snow. Class will be rescheduled if possible and your seat will transfer over unless you can't make the new date, at which point we will refund you.

No Shows

Unfortunately, we cannot refund no shows. You must notify us in advance of missing a class. Please see our cancellation policy above.

ACCOMODATION REQUESTS

During Registration, participants are encouraged to request accommodation for classroom accessibility, ADA accommodation, sensory needs, learning style, and masking.

SAFETY POLICIES

Read our shop safety policies here

Waiver

Read our waiver of liability here.

PHOTO CONSENT

Read our photo consent form here.

Safe Attire

For any classes that use sharp tools, students are asked to wear closed-toed shoes, and non-dangling clothing, and clothing you can get messy or covered in wood chips. Depending on your project or class, some students prefer to also tie up or cover their hair.

Class Size

Our classes on average are 4 to 10 students to ensure students maximize one-on-one contact with our instructors.

Identity, Gender, and Race

Fireweed typically offers several types of classes

  • Classes for women and marginalized genders. Marginalized genders includes women, trans and non-binary people.
    • Non-binary is a term for folks that are gender fluid and don't align with the male or female gender. People also use the term Gender Non-Conforming (GNC) or Two-Spirited (a Native term) to recognize folks beyond the binary.
  • Classes open to students of all genders

  • Classes intended for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students

  • Classes open for students of all ethnic and racial identities

Some may wonder why we offer co-ed classes when our mission is to empower women and marginalized genders. We offer these co-ed classes because men have different learning styles, too! At Fireweed Community Woodshop, there are no expectations of experience based on gender.

Minimum Age

Students must be 18 years of age or older to enroll in courses at Fireweed Community Woodshop. For those under 18 interested in woodworking classes, we’d recommend checking out Leonardo's Basement.

PRICING

We price most 8 student classes at $17.50/hr (except turning because of smaller class sizes and expense of tools). We reduce our pricing to $12.50/hr for sliding scale and $7.50/hr for BIPOC seats. The instructor requests a materials fee that covers their prep time and the materials for class.

Additionally, we have access funds available to students. If you are interested in assistance, email us at hello@fireweedwoodshop.org.

Our pricing covers 50% of our expenses (staff, rent, utilities, tool repair).

Private Courses

We offer opportunities for private group classes. Consider hiring us for your next work retreat, bachelorette party, birthday, anniversary celebration, or whatever it may be! Email hello@fireweedwoodshop.org for more details.

ACCESSIBILITY

Fireweed is wheelchair accessible through the front door, however there is not a nearby accessible parking space, only street parking. To the north of Fireweed’s front door there is a driveway for the next-door apartment building. The terrain is in poor condition where the asphalt meets the concrete. The sidewalk is in good condition up to the doorway. Fireweed has a small 2” threshold ramp both entering and exiting the front door. The current door handle is a thumb latch handle requiring moderate hand strength. There is a doorbell to notify the instructor if having difficulties. The door is light weight, opens inwards to shop space. Equipment and benches are spaced at least 36” apart with T-shaped back up zones available. There is a backroom where hand tool classes take place with a ½” lip on the floor. Currently the side gallery does not have wheelchair access and requires two steps to enter.

There are two workbenches that are designed for wheelchair users.  The table saw and planer are wheelchair accessible. Currently bandsaws, miter saws, drill press, and jointers do not have knee space. The lathes are also designed for standing bodies, but FCW is currently investigating lathe modification. Students that are interested in turning and need seated accommodations should reach out!

The bathroom has a lever door handle. The door is light weight and swings to the right. The toilet has a handlebar on the left side (when seated) and behind the toilet. Lights are automatic and the faucet is a joystick handle. Paper towels are self-pull trifold.

Each class differs for strength requirement. Turning classes require standing for the entirety of class with taking breaks as you need. Hand tool classes are often seated in metal folding chairs. Small side tables are available to place tools closer to participants. Many hand tool classes require moderate hand strength. Instructors can make accommodations with clamping and alternative holds. Power tool classes require various amounts of strength depending on the size of the project.

Noise volume during power tools class is at a high-level requiring ear protection. Ear protection is provided during class in the form of ear plugs or earmuffs. There are spaces offered as sensory breakrooms both in the back room and the side gallery.  Hand tool classes are often quiet but some that include axe work can be louder due to mallets.

The woodshop is dusty. It requires wearing dust masks when power tools are on in addition to PPE including safety glasses and earmuffs or earplugs.

Accommodations can be requested during class registration. All accommodations are welcomed and we will try our best to make it happen! Some previous examples of accommodations include ASL interpretations, unmasked instructor to read lips, additional seating for fatigue, and sensory breaks.
